We are CrossFit TARIS
Our mission
At CrossFit TARIS, our mission is to encourage and empower as many individuals as possible to reach their highest potential and achieve goals once thought impossible, by fostering a lifelong commitment to health, strength and fitness.
Fitness in 100 words:
Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar.
Keep intake to levels that will support exercise, but not body fat.
Practice and train major lifts: deadlift, clean, squat, presses, clean and jerk, and snatch.
Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics: pull ups, dips, rope climb, push ups, sit ups, presses to handstand, pirouettes, flips, splits and holds.
Bike, run, swim, row, etc, hard and fast.
Five or six days per week, mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow.
Routine is the enemy.
Keep workouts short and intense.
Regularly learn and play new sports.

the origin of CrossFit TARIS
I began formal training and co-coaching classes to become a CrossFit coach in 2013 at CrossFit189. In early 2014 I was leading classes on my own and have coached almost every day since. I am very passionate about coaching and CrossFit. Sharing my knowledge and helping people achieve things that they never thought possible is one of my favourite things to do.
In December 2022, the gym I was working at closed. I was unsure of my direction from here and there were members keen to follow me into the ‘unknown’. I knew how important some of the friendships were amongst existing members and also how much a shared space meant to them, so I decided to take a chance and created CrossFit TARIS.
What TARIS means
Shane and I have two incredible children who have a genetic condition, Osteogenesis Imperfecta (brittle bone disease). The first 15 years of their lives in particular, were very challenging. The kids endured countless broken bones, surgeries, treatments, physio, rehab, long and frequent hospital stays and appointments, and as a family we had so much to accept, learn and navigate in the world of medical and disability.
Watching Kaitlyn and Jacob overcome so much adversity and hold no bitterness or resentment for the struggles they have and continue to endure, has had a tremendous impact on me and made me extremely grateful for my own health, physical capabilities and general good fortune. They never use their disability as an excuse and participate in life to their fullest potential despite their limitations.
They have pursued their adult lives with admirable Tenacity, Acceptance, Respect, Integrity and Strength. And this is how the name and meaning of TARIS was created. These are the words that I use to describe my children and my own values, so I wanted them to be the foundation of the TARIS community.
It is very important to me that TARIS is a safe place for anyone and everyone of all abilities, ages and walks of life to come and forget the worries of everyday life for an hour each day. To improve their health, fitness, strength and mindset, and enjoy a community of like-minded people who eventually become an extended family.
Knowing each and every member of TARIS is important to me and I genuinely care about each person’s progress, goals, achievements and health.
EVERYONE is equal and EVERYONE matters at TARIS.
My personal journey
The constant trauma and endless worry of the kids led me into depression, I gained 25kg in weight, was unhappy within myself, and I got very sick with glandular fever in 2005. At this point I was advised to take anti-depressants, however, before I had my kids I was very active, so I wanted to try help myself first and I made the decision to change my lifestyle.
I started walking, then added in some jogging and before I knew it, I was running 7-10km most days and/or doing a bunch of body weight exercises. Not long after that I joined a bootcamp at our local park and started to regain my fitness and confidence.
In late 2010 I decided to try Body Building and progressed from bootcamp to gym, and started prepping for my first competitive Body Building season in 2012. During this season I won 3 x QLD State Titles in INBA and 1 x Qld State Title in ANB. I then won 2 x National Titles at the INBA Australian Championships in Melbourne, and 2nd place at the ANB National Championships in Sydney. In October that year I accepted an invite to represent the INBA Federation on stage at Brisbane Fitness Expo, with a live Q&A hosted by Michelle Bridges and was featured in a 4-page article in the July/August edition of Oxygen Magazine in 2013.
I was planning to compete in the INBA International Championships, but in January 2013 my direction changed when I tried my first CrossFit class at CrossFit189 and was immediately drawn to the methodology.
I entered my first CrossFit Open 2 weeks after starting with no idea what I was doing or what the Open was and fell in love with competing. My training for the next Open began… and the rest is history.

Unfortunately, early in 2021, I sustained a complete rotator cuff tear/detachment due to an infection in my shoulder from a previous surgery. I had a major rotator cuff reconstruction in June 2021, which meant that competing was too great of a risk for re-injury in the future. I still loved CrossFit very much, so I made the difficult decision to retire from competing and focused all of my energy into coaching.
As for training, I still join in a workout almost every day and still LOVE CrossFit. But now my focus is on longevity and staying as fit, healthy and strong as possible, for a long as possible.
